Though it might not feel like spring yet, it’s just a matter of time before the flowers start to bloom, the beer gardens start to open, and the paddlers take to the river! Don’t forget, though, while you are enjoying Delaware River currents (or Delaware River views!), that we all need to pitch in to keep our river clean and healthy. Spring brings a smattering of river cleanup events that give you the opportunity to get involved with others who are as passionate about our amazing resource as you are!
This Saturday, the Delaware River City Corporation is hosting a volunteer workday for Love your Park Week at Pennypack Park on the Delaware (7800 State Road, Philadelphia, PA, 19136)! Join in from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM and plant trees, remove invasive plants, and clean up trash along the trail and shoreline. Find out more here.
If you can’t make it this Saturday, come to the Frankford Creek Cleanup in Philadelphia on June 7th, 2016 hosted by United by Blue. The cleanup will take place at Fishers Lane Bridge at Tacony Creek Park, intersection of I St. and Ramona Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19124 from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM. United by Blue is looking for volunteers to join them for a cleanup of the “watershed so nice, they named it thrice”: the Tookany/Tacony Frankford Watershed! The TTF Creek spurred the creation of many parks along it’s banks, and eventually drains into the Delaware River. Unfortunately, flooding, illegal dumping, and littering bring a significant amount of trash to Fishers Lane Bridge. Volunteers will be treated to little baby’s ice cream after the cleanup, and snacks by the living room cafe before and during the event. Register here!
If you really want to get your hands wet in the waters of the Delaware, though, United by Blue is also hosting a clean up on July 12th form 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Head to the intersection of Princeton Ave. and Milnor St., Philadelphia, PA 19135 to join United by Blue for a cleanup of the Delaware River and a locally-know hangout at the end of Princeton Ave. The Princeton Ave. clearing offers beautiful views of the Delaware River and a unique picnic and meeting area for nearby residents. Unfortunately, there is a large amount of short dumping and heavy littering that occurs here. Once again, you can expect Little baby’s ice cream after the cleanup, and snacks by The living room cafe before and during the event. Sign up here!
Take some time to spruce the river up for spring so that it glitters when you take to the waters this summer!
